Clinical Trial Confirms TocoGaia®’s Role in Healthy Aging, Antioxidant Defence and Genomic Stability in Older Adults

July 7th, 2025 – New York, USA – A newly published human clinical study in peer-reviewed journal Nutrients1 has confirmed that a tocotrienol-enriched functional beverage, featuring PhytoGaia’s TocoGaia®, provides clinically meaningful anti-aging improvements – preservation of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase levels – two key enzymes that protect against oxidative stress and support the body’s natural antioxidant defense system. Notably, telomerase activity was significantly better maintained, while markers of oxidative DNA damage were reduced in the TocoGaia® group, suggesting enhanced genomic stability and potential protection against cellular aging.
The study, titled “A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Clinical Trial on the Effects of Tocotrienol-Rich Vitamin E on Quality of Life, Antioxidant Status, and Genomic Stability in Older Adults,” was conducted over six months with 67 healthy participants aged 50 to 70. The study was conducted by researchers at the National University of Malaysia (UKM).
Key Clinical Findings:
- Clinically Meaningful Improvement in Psychological Well-Being
Participants who consumed the tocotrienol-enriched beverage (TocoGaia®) showed significant improvements in WHOQOL-Psychological scores, reflecting better mood and emotional resilience.
- Preservation of Antioxidant Enzyme Activity
TocoGaia® supplementation shows significant preservation of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase, two key enzymes that support cellular protection against oxidative stress and contribute to the body’s natural antioxidant defence system.
- Supports and Maintenance of Telomerase Activity
Telomerase is an enzyme critical for maintaining telomere length. Telomerase activity was significantly better maintained in the TocoGaia® group, suggesting genomic stability and a potential slowing down of cellular aging.
- Reduced Inflammation and Oxidative DNA Damage
The supplemented group showed reductions in key inflammatory markers such as TNF-α, as well as other cytokines including IL-6 and TGF-β, along with lower levels of 8-OHdG, a biomarker of oxidative DNA damage – highlighting tocotrienol’s role in modulating inflammation and promoting cellular integrity.
- Excellent Safety Profile
No adverse effects were reported. Clinical markers such as cortisol, insulin, liver enzymes and lipid levels remained stable within normal ranges throughout the study.
“This is one of the most comprehensive human trials to date showing that tocotrienols (TocoGaia®) can positively modulate several key hallmarks of aging, from reducing inflammation and oxidative stress to enhancing genomic protection,” said Dr Ariati Aris, Scientific Affairs Specialist at PhytoGaia. “What’s truly encouraging is that these benefits were seen within just six months of supplementation, with no reported side effects. These findings add robust support to the growing scientific evidence positioning tocotrienols (TocoGaia®) as a safe and effective nutraceutical for healthy aging.”
“This study comes at a pivotal time when brands and consumers alike are demanding natural, effective, and above all – safe solutions for healthy aging,” commented Mr Bryan See, Vice President of PhytoGaia. “Honestly, TocoGaia® makes it easier for brands to compete. It’s clean-label, clinically validated and delivers exactly what today’s consumers and product teams are looking for”.
Building on this momentum, PhytoGaia also offers STGaia® – a novel synergistic formulation of plant squalene and tocotrienols/tocopherol – developed specifically to support healthy aging across both internal and external dimensions, including skin nutrition, mitochondrial health and hair vitality. While TocoGaia® strengthens antioxidant defences and genomic stability, STGaia® complements it by replenishing age-depleted squalene and promoting mitochondrial function, skin barrier integrity and cellular energy balance. Together, TocoGaia® and STGaia® provide a clean-label, clinically supported foundation for brands formulating science-backed solutions for longevity, beauty-from-within and total wellness.
